We all have those cartoon shows which we grew up watching, for me it was the Ninja Turtles. I credit my fandom towards the Ninja Turtles to my brother, who was obsessed with them much more than I was. He would also get my parents to buy us tapes of the show, and we would watch it over and over. I loved these guys! Looking back on them now, they really epitomized the 90’s culture. They were crime fighters; they ate tons on pizza, rode skateboards, they were pretty much everything every kid wanted to be. One of my first costumes for Halloween was actually a Ninja Turtle. If I remember correctly, I was Leonardo; I had the two swords, the mask and even a plastic turtle shell to go with everything. I remember feeling like I actually was one of the Ninja Turtles.
What I remember also about these guys is that they were everywhere. There was so much merchandise surrounding them, it was crazy! They even had a Pizza Hut pizza related to hem somehow, but I don’t think they had it here in the Philippines. The amount of toys these guys had was already nuts. I even remember my brother having a toy of their blimp which you had to inflate and could hang from the ceiling of your room. My brother and I also had a lot of their action figures as well. But the best things related to the show have got to be their video games! Together with my brother and my cousins, we would play their old Super NES games crazy. I remember being pretty bad at it because I was super young at the time, but I just remember having a ton of fun. Being Leonardo and just ripping through the Foot Ninjas was a blast. I even downloaded a SNES emmulator jsut so i could play the games again. They're incredibly dated, but i still have loads of fun playing it. Like the classic show, their games are timeless.
Seeing all these new renditions of the turtles has made me realize though that they no longer have that impact which they had on kids back in the 90’s. They were a phenomenon to say the very least.
